A massive fire broke out in a building near Glasgow Central Station in Scotland on Sunday afternoon, forcing evacuations and shutting down train services across the city. Authorities said the blaze caused part of the building to collapse. No injuries were reported.
The fire started in a vape shop on Union Street and quickly spread through the building. The affected structure is part of the historic Forsyth Building, which dates back to the 19th century, according to BBC report.
Emergency crews responded after the alarm was raised around 3.45 pm local time. Smoke first appeared from the building near an entrance to the railway station. Within a few hours, large flames engulfed the upper floors as the fire intensified.
What Caused Fire Near Glasgow Central Station?
Authorities said the fire started on the ground floor of a four-storey commercial building. The blaze began inside a vape shop and spread quickly through the structure.
Firefighters faced strong flames and thick smoke as the fire moved through the building, according to BBC report. Parts of the Forsyth Building collapsed due to the damage caused by the blaze.
Over 60 firefighters and 15 fire engines were sent to the scene to douse the flames. Crews used high-reach vehicles and other specialist equipment to control the flames. A water rescue team also assisted at the scene.
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said firefighters worked through the evening to control the blaze. Officials confirmed the fire started on the ground floor before spreading to other parts of the building.
The incident caused major disruption across Glasgow’s transport network. National Rail said dozens of train services were cancelled after the station closed.
The station is the busiest railway hub in Scotland. Rail officials said it would remain closed until further notice due to safety concerns.
Nearby streets also closed as emergency crews set up cordons around the area. Police blocked roads between Gordon Street and St Vincent Street and set up diversions for traffic.
Large crowds gathered behind police barriers on Renfield Street and Gordon Street to watch the blaze. Emergency services urged people to stay away from the scene.
The voco Grand Central Hotel was evacuated as a safety measure.
