With temperatures rising sharply across several parts of the country, the India Meteorological Department has issued a detailed heatwave advisory, urging people to take precautions. Officials said people should avoid staying in direct sunlight for long hours, especially during the afternoon. The advisory also asks people to drink enough water, wear light and breathable clothes, and avoid heavy outdoor work during peak heat.
The weather department has advised extra care for children, elderly people, and those with existing health problems. “The department emphasised that early awareness and preventive action are critical in reducing heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke,” an official said.
Temperatures Cross 40 Degrees C
According to the IMD, maximum temperatures in many parts of northwest, central, and peninsular India are currently between 40°C and 44°C. The highest temperature of 44.5°C was recorded in Sri Ganganagar.
In several regions, temperatures are 5°C or more above normal, showing a growing heat stress situation. “The IMD indicated that heatwave conditions are very likely to develop in isolated pockets of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and central India over the coming days,” the official said.
Hot and humid weather is expected in coastal and eastern regions, while some parts of north India may see warm nights.
“The department further projected no significant change in maximum temperatures over northwest India till April 27, followed by a gradual fall, while central and other regions may witness a gradual rise and subsequent decline in temperatures during the forecast period,” the official added.
