Amalaki Ekadashi Vrat Katha
According to one of the tales associated with Amalaki Ekadashi Vrat, the Amla tree emerged from Lord Brahma’s tears. Here’s how the story unfolds.
After appearing from Lord Vishnu’s navel, Lord Brahma wondered who created him and wanted to know the purpose of his existence. So he performed intense penance to seek an answer. As he earnestly waited, Lord Vishnu appeared before him. And soon after seeing his creator, Lord Brahma had tears of joy.
Overwhelmed by Brahma’s devotion, Lord Vishnu blessed him and said that his tears would transform into Amla trees, and the fruits of these trees would be dear to him. He also said that those who would worship the Amla tree on the Phalguna Shukla Paksha Ekadashi Tithi would get blessed by him. Hence, devotees worship the Amla tree.
Moreover, it is believed that the Gods/Goddesses reside in the various parts of the Amla tree. Therefore, devotees seek Lord Vishnu and other deities’ blessings by offering prayers to the Amla tree.
