A 29-year-old man died Sunday afternoon after being shot by Houston police officers in the Kashmere Gardens area. It was the second officer-involved shooting in Houston County, Texas on the same day, according to police.
Officers were called to the 1400 block of Wayne Street around 2.19 pm after receiving reports of a man with a gun. Houston Police Assistant Chief James Skelton said officers arrived and found the man armed.
Police said officers gave the man multiple commands to lower his weapon. Instead, the man raised the gun toward the officers. At that point, an officer fired his weapon, striking the man, Skelton said.
Investigators believe the man had been arguing with family members inside a nearby home and was threatening them with the gun. Police said he was later found outside the house and appeared to be trying to get back inside. It is not yet clear how or why he ended up outside.
“This is an unfortunate situation,” Skelton said. He added that officers were left with no other option when the man raised his weapon.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have not released his name. The officer who fired the shot is a three-year veteran of the Houston Police Department’s Northeast Division.
Earlier the same day, another officer-involved shooting occurred about 12 hours earlier, according to Houston police. Around 1.40 am, officers stopped a man for a traffic violation in the 4700 block of Tidwell.
During that traffic stop, officers learned the driver had a felony warrant, police said. When the man resisted arrest, an officer shot him. Police have not released additional details about that incident.
Both shootings are under investigation, as is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings.
