Authorities in Kankakee, Illinois, warned residents to seek immediate shelter Tuesday evening after deputies reported a confirmed tornado near the Kankakee County Fairgrounds. The Kankakee County Sheriff’s Office initially said deputies were tracking rotation in the clouds around 5000 West and 6000 South Road and near Interstate 57 close to the fairgrounds. Residents in the area were urged to take cover as severe weather conditions developed.

Shortly afterward, deputies confirmed that a tornado had been spotted “bouncing up and down” near the fairgrounds. The sighting prompted a Particularly Dangerous Situation (PDS) Tornado Warning covering parts of Kankakee and nearby communities, including Bourbonnais, Illinois, and Bradley, Illinois.

Tornado Warning And Path

According to the National Weather Service office in Chicago and Romeoville, Illinois, a tornado warning remained in effect until 7:00 PM CDT for southeastern Kankakee County.

At 6:35 PM CDT, meteorologists reported a confirmed large and extremely dangerous tornado located over Aroma Park, Illinois, near Kankakee, moving east at about 25 mph.

Officials described the situation as life-threatening, warning that flying debris could be deadly to anyone without proper shelter. Mobile homes were said to be at particular risk of destruction, while homes, businesses, and vehicles could face severe damage or even complete destruction.

Forecasters said the tornado was expected to move toward Hopkins Park, Illinois around 6:45 PM, with additional communities such as Momence, Illinois potentially in its path.

The warning area included roughly 71,000 people, as well as 32 schools and three hospitals, according to the weather service’s assessment.

Emergency officials continued urging residents across the affected areas to take cover immediately and move to the lowest level of sturdy buildings as the tornado tracked eastward through the region.
