At least two people were initially reported injured during a shooting on the campus of Kentucky State University (KSU) on Tuesday afternoon, and authorities later confirmed that one person was killed and another was hospitalized in critical condition.
Frankfort Police said officers responded to reports of an “active aggressor” around 3:30–3:35 PM, with the incident occurring at Young Hall on the university’s south campus. Officers from Frankfort Police, KSU Campus Police, and the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office secured the area within minutes and took a suspect into custody.
Roughly an hour after the initial emergency response, authorities announced that one victim had died from their injuries, while a second victim was transported to the hospital in critical condition. Police emphasized that the campus remains under full lockdown until further notice as safety sweeps continue.
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear confirmed both the arrest and the casualties, stressing that the incident appeared to be isolated and not a mass shooting. In an updated statement on X, he wrote:
“The shooting that took place today at Kentucky State University appears to be an isolated incident — not a mass shooting. The suspect has been arrested, and there is no ongoing threat. Two individuals were critically injured, and I am sad to share that one has now passed away… Violence has no place in our commonwealth or country. Let’s please pray for the families affected and for our KSU students.”
He also thanked law enforcement for their swift response, saying they “acted quickly to protect our people.”
