Khan Sir Shares 200-year-old Story Behind Bihar Becoming the Land of IAS Officers

Khan Sir is a name that never goes out of context when it comes to motivational stories. He is truly a teacher with almost no haters. His students believe that he genuinely cares about educating people and uplifting society, and he strongly believes that education should be accessible to everyone.

This is also the motivation that he talked about in one of his recent appearances at the The Great Indian Kapil Show. The Patna-based educator emphasised that education should be an affordable right, not a luxury. He also shared an anecdote on how he refused an offer worth Rs 107 crore, choosing purpose over profit. Instead of chasing wealth, he stayed firm in his decision to teach underprivileged students and keep education affordable for all.

Not only this, he also shared that he has also opened a hospital in Patna, the capital of Bihar, where the cost of every test is very low— almost 5 per cent of what private hospitals usually charge. The idea is simple: to benefit poor people and make healthcare more affordable.

Why Bihar is the factory of IAS Officers?

Another instance that has been going viral from the same show is when Kapil Sharma asked Khan Sir why Bihar produces so many IAS officers. The answer, Khan Sir claims, traces back nearly 200 years.

In the episode, Khan Sir explained the historical reason behind Bihar’s strong presence in India’s civil services. He said the story begins during British rule nearly 200 years ago, when Bihar’s economy was largely dependent on agriculture. Its extremely fertile land made it one of the best regions for farming.

The British introduced a system in which zamindars (landlords) were given the responsibility of collecting taxes from farmers. Many of these landlords often oppressed local farmers. However, when tax collection failed or disputes arose, the British used to send a Collector, whose role has now evolved into that of the District Magistrate. When villagers saw that the Collector had the authority to question, punish, and even remove powerful zamindars, they became inspired. That was the moment when many began dreaming that their children should become Collectors. According to Khan Sir, this mindset was passed down through generations, which is why even today Bihar produces a large number of IAS officers.

The UPSC results were released on March 6, and like in previous years, many of the toppers are from Bihar.
