Satellite imagery has revealed extensive damage at the secure compound of Ali Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader, in Tehran following a major joint US-Israeli daylight attack on Saturday, February 28, 2026. The image, taken by Airbus Defence and Space on Saturday morning, shows collapsed buildings at the complex, which typically serves as Khamenei’s residence and main premises for hosting senior officials. A black plume of smoke was seen rising from the compound, located in downtown Tehran.
Witnesses reported that one of the first explosions occurred near Khamenei’s office. Roads leading to the compound were subsequently shut down by authorities. Iranian state television confirmed the blast but did not provide details about the cause.
According to reports, the operation specifically targeted “symbols of government,” with missiles striking areas near Khamenei’s residential compound and office. The strike came as Israel launched a daylight attack on Iran’s capital, with smoke seen rising from several downtown areas.
The United States has deployed fighter jets and warships to the region to pressure Iran over its nuclear programme. A US official and another person familiar with the operation said the United States is participating in the broader military action, though the full extent of its involvement remains unclear.

US President Donald Trump has pushed for a deal to limit Iran’s nuclear activities. Iran, however, maintains that it has the right to enrich uranium and has refused to negotiate on issues such as its long-range missile programme and its support for groups like Hamas and Hezbollah.
Iran has warned that US military bases and personnel in the region could be targeted if it retaliates. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said the strike was carried out “to remove threats,” without offering further details.
Where Is Ayatollah Khamenei At The Moment?
It is unclear whether the 86-year-old leader was inside his office at the time of the explosion. Khamenei has not been seen in public for several days as tensions with the United States have escalated.
As per the latest reports, an Iranian official told Reuters that Iran’s supreme leader is not currently in Tehran and has been moved to a “secure location.” His exact status remains unclear.
