shamar joseph sets world record; becomes first player in cricket's 56-year history to take 4 wickets and catches in an odi or t20 innings

Shamar Joseph achieved an unprecedented feat in a record-breaking as West Indies continued their unbeaten run in the 2026 T20 World Cup and became the third team after South Africa and India to finish the group stage unbeaten after beating Italy in their final game of the first round by 42 runs on Thursday (February 19) at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

Joseph was involved in eight of the 10 wickets as the Italians were bowled out for 123 while chasing 166. Joseph took four wickets with the ball as he dismissed Italian captain Harry Manenti alongside Grant Stewart, Thomas Draca, and Ali Hasan. He also took the catches of Anthony Mosca, Syed Naqvi, JJ Smuts, and Gian Meade.

Shamar Joseph Creates History

Shamar is the first player since the first player-ever to achieve the rare double of four wickets and catches in the same innings of a Men’s Women’s t20I. Infact, this has not been done by any player ever in an ODI game since the format’s first-ever game in 1971. This means that the West Indies star is the first-ever player from either gender to achieve the rare feat in a white-ball game as well as in an ICC tournament too.

There have been three previous instances in men’s T20Is as well as ODIs of a player taking four catches and three wickets. Both formats have also seen multiple occasions in which a player has taken four wickets and three catches in an innings.

So rare is this feat that it has been achieved twice, even in Test cricket’s 149-year history. England’s Phil Edmonds took a four-wicket as well as four catches against New Zealand at Christchurch in 1979. Later, Australian star Mitchell Johnson managed to replicate the elusive double against South Africa at the WACA in 2012.

Joseph has also equalled the world record for the most catches in a T20 World Cup match. Previously, Daren Sammy, Aiden Markram, Glenn Maxwell, and George Munsey.
