President Donald Trump on Friday floated the idea of potentially nominating Republican Senator Ted Cruz to a future seat on the US Supreme Court, despite Cruz previously saying he was not interested in such a role.
Speaking at a rally in Corpus Christi, Trump praised the Texas lawmaker as “an amazing guy” while making light of how a confirmation vote might unfold in Congress. He joked that Cruz would receive overwhelming bipartisan support because members of both parties would be eager to see him leave the Senate.
“He’s the only guy I know who’ll get 100% of the Democrat vote and 100% of the Republican vote,” Trump quipped. “They want to get him out of there. He is such a pain — but he’s so good and so talented.”
Cruz, however, said last month that he was not interested in serving on the nation’s highest court.
