Jonathan Ross has been identified as the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent who fatally shot Renee Nicole Good in a residential area of Minneapolis on Wednesday.

The Department of Homeland Security and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem have said the 43-year-old acted in self-defence. The shooting has prompted protests, with several groups calling for Ross’s arrest. It remains unclear whether any action will be taken against him.

Ross has served for nearly two decades with the US Border Patrol and ICE. Records show he has worked as a deportation officer with ICE since 2015.

He previously served with the Indiana National Guard and was deployed to Iraq from 2004 to 2005. After returning to the US, he attended college before joining the Border Patrol in 2007 near El Paso, Texas. He worked there until 2015, including as a field intelligence agent focused on gathering and analysing information related to cartels and drug and human smuggling.

Ross was seriously injured in June last year during an attempted arrest in the Minneapolis suburb of Bloomington, according to court records. He was part of a team seeking to arrest a man identified as Roberto Munoz-Guatemala, who left the scene in his vehicle. FBI agents activated emergency lights and sirens instructing the man to stop, but he did not comply.

Court records say Ross positioned his vehicle diagonally in front of Munoz-Guatemala’s car in an attempt to block it. After a brief exchange, the suspect drove away while Ross’s arm was caught in the vehicle, dragging him along the street. Ross then fired his Taser, striking Munoz-Guatemala in the head, face and shoulder.

Since Wednesday’s shooting, Ross has not made a public appearance or statement. The Daily Mail reported on Saturday that neighbours said neither Ross nor his family had been seen since the incident, adding that the family appeared to have left their home in the Minneapolis suburbs.

The publication reported that federal agents were present at the residence, where Ross lives with his wife, Patrixia. A neighbour told the outlet she saw Patrixia pacing in the driveway several hours after the shooting.

Authorities have not confirmed Ross’s whereabouts or whether he is under any restrictions as investigations continue.
