A woman from Birmingham survived a life-threatening medical emergency after doctors said she developed sepsis, possibly from being licked by her dog.
Manjit Sangha, 56, became extremely sick in July 2025 and later had to undergo a quadruple amputation to save her life.
Her husband, Kam Sangha, said everything changed in less than a day. Manjit came home from work feeling unwell on Sunday night. The next evening, he found her unconscious on their couch, with blue lips and very cold hands and feet. He immediately called an ambulance, and she was rushed to the hospital.
Manjit was taken to the ICU at New Cross Hospital, where doctors placed her in a medically induced coma. During her treatment, she went into cardiac arrest six times, according to PEOPLE report. Doctors told her family they were unsure she would survive.
Doctors later found that Manjit had sepsis, a dangerous reaction to an infection. They believe a small cut or scratch may have been infected after a lick from her dog.
According to the Mayo Clinic, sepsis causes the body to react in a harmful way to infection, which can lead to organ failure and death if not treated quickly.
Manjit also developed disseminated intravascular coagulation, a rare complication that causes abnormal blood clotting throughout the body. The National Institutes of Health says the condition can be extremely dangerous and can damage organs.
Her family said hospital staff warned them early on that she had only days to live. They were also told that even if she survived, she might lose multiple limbs.
What Surgeries Did Doctors Perform To Save Her Life?
As Manjit’s condition worsened, surgeons had no choice but to amputate both of her legs below the knee and both of her hands. Doctors also removed her spleen after she developed pneumonia and gallstones.
After 32 weeks in the hospital, Manjit’s health finally improved enough for her to return home. She continues to recover with the support of her family, including her husband Kam, who said she showed extreme strength throughout her illness.
Her family created a fundraiser through GoFundMe to help pay for advanced prosthetics, including possible robotic hands, physical therapy, mental health support, and necessary changes to her home so she can move around more easily.
Manjit said she is heartbroken by everything she has lost but is determined to keep fighting. She hopes to walk again with prosthetics and return to work one day. She also wants to share her story so others understand how serious infections can be.
“It could happen to anybody,” she said in an interview with BBC. “Losing your limbs in such a short time is a very big thing. It’s not something to take lightly,” she added.
