Supreme Court Verdict on Aravalli Ranges Live: The Supreme Court on Monday, December 29 ordered a stay on its previous decision on the new definition of the Aravalli Hills.

Hearing a Suo Moto case on the matter, a bench led by the Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant, “put in abeyance” its earlier decision, which accepted the Central Environment Ministry’s definition of Aravalli Hills and Aravalli Range. Additionally, the court ordered for a new expert panel to review the issue.

The debate over the Aravallis began after the Centre introduced a new definition of the mountain range. Earlier, the Supreme Court had approved a height-based definition to determine which landforms should be classified as part of the Aravalli Hills for the purpose of regulating mining activities. In May 2024, while hearing a case related to illegal mining in the Aravallis, the court noted that different states were using varying interpretations of the terms “Aravalli Hills” and “Aravalli Range”. To resolve this inconsistency, it constituted a committee to examine the matter.

The previous order was passed on November 20.
