According to the customs of the Islamic lunar calendar, or Hijri calendar, the official confirmation of Eid al-Fitr will only come after the crescent moon is sighted.

India usually celebrates Eid a day after Saudi Arabia, as the crescent moon is first sighted in the Gulf nation, as well as in some parts of India and a few Western countries.

Muslims in Saudi Arabia have been urged to sight the Shawwal crescent moon on the evening of Wednesday, 18 March. This sighting will determine the start of Eid al-Fitr 2026 in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia after a month of fasting during Ramadan. According to the Saudi Supreme Court, anyone who sees the moon with the naked eye or through binoculars can inform the nearest court and record their testimony there. If the crescent is sighted on March 18, Eid will commence the next day, March 19. If it’s not, then Eid will be celebrated on March 20.
