Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Chandrasekar Joseph Vijay — a top rated actor-politician — is all set to take oath as the next Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on May 10 (today), after getting a nod from Governor Rajendra Arlekar. Vijay achieved this feat as he finally secured the majority, following 5 days of hectic meetings that were full of several twists and turns as alliance members kept him teetering on the brink. The swearing-in ceremony will take place at the sprawling Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium at 10 AM on Sunday.
Vijay, ever since May 4 election results, has met Tamil Nadu Governor at least three times, while one of the meetings was immediately after the results, to stake claim for government formation. However, each time, Vijay failed to get an invitation, as he was not having the numbers — i.e. support of 118 MLAs. Sometimes with 108, then with 113, one more time with 116 — Vijay tried three times but failed to get a breakthrough.
As Vijay was busy managing the majority, talks had begun in Tamil Nadu circles that DMK-AIADMK were getting closer and exploring options to make the most of the opportunity, and somehow crack the majority mark. However, the move itself was not acceptable to a section of leaders of both the parties.
Though, talks about DMK-AIADMK alliance did raise anxiety in the TVK as Vijay threatened that all his MLAs would immediately resign if Stalin and Palaniswamy come together to form the government.
However, the DMK-AIADMK tango didn’t last long for more than a teaser and the focus was back once again on TVK.
Friday and Saturday saw fast-paced developments when the script of Tamil Nadu’s government formation started moving towards the climax and Vijay was finally able to secure the magic number of — 118 — required for government formation.
This was made possible with the support from VCK and IUML, as Vijay was already having the support of CPI, CPI(M) and Congress.
TVK Emerged As Single Largest Party, Then Got Support From Congress, Left, VCK and IUML
Vijay’s TVK, which has emerged as the single largest party in Tamil Nadu with 108 seats, fell short of an absolute majority.
However, after five days of hectic meetings with regional parties, Vijay was been able to secure the support of Communist Party of India (CPI), Communist Party of India – Marxist (CPIM), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), and Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), taking the total tally to 121, three more required for government formation.
After support from VCK on Saturday, Vijay wasted no time to seek an appointment with Governor Arlekar and everybody hoped that all hurdles were cleared.
But then came another twist.
Initially, reports surfaced that the Governor had denied an appointment to Vijay as he was scheduled to visit Kerala. But within minutes, the situation turnaround once again in the favour of Vijay when reports surfaced that the Governor had cancelled his Kerala trip and agreed on meeting Vijay.
Soon after that, Vijay left for Raj Bhavan, along with representatives from Congress, CPI, CPIM, VCK and other regional parties.
He met and facilitated the governor and finally staked claim (for the fourth time) to form the government. The meeting went for almost an hour, keeping lakhs of his fans waiting for the big decision.
Finally, news came in from Raj Bhavan that Vijay had secured Governor’s nod to form the government and will face the floor test on May 13.
The development marks a generational change in Tamil Nadu’s political history, that for decades, has been dominated by Dravidian politics.

According to reports, all these parties have extended an unconditional support to TVK Vijay, amid talks going around in media circles that some of the allies may secure cabinet berths.
Why IUML Offered Unconditional Support To TVK
The letter to the Governor, written by IUML leaders SSB Syed Farooq Basha and AM Shahjahan, conveyed the party’s “unconditional support” to the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam-led by Joseph Vijay for forming a government in Tamil Nadu.
The letter said the support is being conveyed “in the interest of stable, secular, and democratic governance” for the people of Tamil Nadu.
VCK Confirms Support to Vijay
Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) president Thol. Thirumavalavan gave an official confirmation letter to Aadhav Arjuna, TVK General Secretary-Election Campaign Management, and extended the party’s support to TVK to form a government in the state.
Thirumavalavan wrote a letter to the Tamil Nadu Governor stating that the party has extended support to TVK.
“This support is extended pursuant to the results of the General Assembly Elections held for the State of Tamil Nadu on 23rd April 2026, and is being conveyed in the interest of stable and democratic governance for the people of Tamil Nadu. I request Your Excellency to take on record my unconditional support,” the letter said.
Congress MP Manickam Tagore said TVK has reached the majority mark with the help of supporting parties. “118 reached,” he said.
Vijay has won from two seats and will resign from one seat, taking the effective strength of the party to 107 and of the assembly to 233.
Vijay had earlier met Tamil Nadu Governor but had not been invited to form a government as he did not have “official numbers” for majority support.
After he takes the oath, Vijay will become the first leader outside the DMK and AIADMK formations to head a government in Tamil Nadu since 1967.
