the best time to chant these shiv mantras for peace, clarity and blessings

Lord Shiva is believed to be one of the most benevolent Gods to pray to. It is believed that the devotee doesn’t choose Lord Shiva, but it is Mahadev who hand picks his children. If you are a Shiv Bhakt, knowing when to chant which prayer, fast tracks the indescribable feeling of bliss that comes with diligently following your spiritual path.

Om Namah Shivay

॥ ॐ नमः शिवाय

Om Namah Shivay is best chanted at the Brahma Muhurta, between 4am to 6am in the morning. Chanting the prayer a sum total of 108 times, with utmost devotion, is believed to be the most auspicious time to do this, given that the mind is fresh, and untouched by the hustle bustle of the day to follow.

Om Namah Shivaya is also believed to carry immense benefits when chanted during dusk hour, particularly on trayodashi days on the calendar. Shiva Purana legends affirm that the Lord dances on Mount Meru, during twilight. Chanting during this hour is also believed to dissolve the karma unassumingly accumulated over the day.

Finally, a Shiv bhakt should never miss chanting this powerful mantra during a Shravan Somwar. It is believed that any prayer made on this day to Lord Shiva, reaches from your lips, directly to His ears.

Mahamrityunjaya Mantra

ॐ त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे सुगन्धिं पुष्टिवर्धनम्।

उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान् मृत्योर्मुक्षीय मामृतात्॥

A minimum of 11 repetitions of the Mahamrityunjaya mantra is considered potent during the Brahma Muhurta. It is believed to wrap the devotee’s body, mind and soul in a kavach, keeping them protected through the day.

Additionally, this mantra in particular is potent when chanted at any hour of the day. The legend goes that Lord Shiva Himself had revealed this to Markandeya. That being said, chanting this mantra should not at all be missed during the occasion of Mahashivratri – a 1,008 repetitions are recommended through the course of the day. As a matter of fact, one night of chanting this during Maha Shivratri, is believed to be worth years of devotion and penance.

Stotrams: The Tandava and Rudrashtakam

The Tandava happens to be the perfect opening for your prayers during Shivratri. Additionally, chanting it at times when you find yourself sitting in your grief with a heavy heart is believed to be invogorating for the soul. As for the Rudrashtakam, it is meant to be chanted in one sitting, on every Monday. This is best done either right after your morning bath, or during dusk when Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati are believed to be in each others presence. The midnight hour is also incredibly potent in this regard.
