This massive prize comes just a few months after a lucky winner took home $1.787 billion in September, the second-highest jackpot ever recorded.
The drawing will take place on December 24 at approximately 10.59 pm ET (9.59 pm CT). Powerball holds three drawings each week, on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday. Players in Tennessee can buy tickets in stores until 9 pm CT (10 pm ET), when ticket sales temporarily stop for the draw. Tickets are sold at many gas stations and grocery stores across the state, and players can also purchase them online using the official TN iLottery app if they are 18 or older and physically in Tennessee.
Payout Options And Taxes
The Powerball winner can pick two ways to get the prize — the annuity or the lump sum. The annuity gives one payment right away, then 29 yearly payments.
Each year’s payment is 5% bigger than the last. After federal taxes, the total would be about $1 billion.

The lump sum gives all the money at once, $781.3 million before taxes. After federal taxes, the winner would get around $490.9 million. Tennessee has no state tax on lottery winnings, so the amount stays the same.
The annuity gives money slowly over 30 years. The lump sum gives money all at once. Federal taxes apply to both, with the highest rate of 37% for the lump sum.
