Malaysia does not have a president. The Southeast Asian nation operates under a federal parliamentary system with a constitutional monarchy, in which executive power rests with the prime minister while the head of state is a king.

The head of government is Anwar Ibrahim, who has served as prime minister since November 2022. As prime minister, Anwar leads the executive branch and oversees national policy, the cabinet and day-to-day governance.

Malaysia’s head of state is the king, officially known as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. The current monarch is Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, who assumed office on January 31, 2024. The king’s role is largely ceremonial but constitutionally significant, including appointing the prime minister, assenting to legislation and serving as a symbol of national unity.

Under Malaysia’s system, the prime minister is appointed by the king and is typically the leader of the political party or coalition that commands a majority in the lower house of Parliament, known as the House of Representatives. Once appointed, the prime minister holds executive authority and forms the cabinet.

Malaysia’s monarchy is unique in that the king is not hereditary in the usual sense. Instead, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong is elected for a five-year term by and from among the rulers of Malaysia’s nine hereditary Malay states, following a rotational system.

The country’s parliamentary democracy combines elements of constitutional monarchy and representative government. While the king performs formal and ceremonial duties, political power is exercised by the elected government led by the prime minister.

Confusion sometimes arises because many countries use the title of president for both head of state and head of government. In Malaysia, those roles are separated. The king serves as head of state, while the prime minister functions as the chief executive.
