IIT Madras Launches Online BS Programme in Aeronautics and Space Technology

iit madras launches online bs programme in aeronautics and space technology

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has introduced a new online Bachelor of Science (BS) programme in Aeronautics and Space Technology, aiming to expand access to aerospace education. The programme is designed to provide students with strong technical knowledge and industry-relevant skills in aviation, space research, and emerging aerospace technologies.

The programme is open to students who have completed Class 12 or an equivalent qualification. Diploma holders and working professionals can also apply. One of the key highlights of the course is that candidates are not required to clear national-level entrance exams such as JEE or GATE, making aerospace education more accessible to a wider group of learners.

Students have the flexibility to complete the programme according to their own schedule, making it suitable for working professionals, individuals enrolled in other degree courses, and those aiming to earn an undergraduate qualification. Examinations will be held on Sundays and will include both centre-based tests and online proctored assessments. Learners can move forward at their own speed while following structured milestones set within the programme.

The programme will be mainly delivered online, enabling students from across India and abroad to enrol. However, learners will also get opportunities to participate in hands-on laboratory training at IIT Madras campus facilities.

IIT Madras Launches BS Programme in Aeronautics and Space Technology

According to an official statement from IIT Madras, the BS programme concentrates on the complete design and development of aircraft and spacecraft. The course is intended to prepare students for industrial research and development roles, and higher education, by combining conceptual learning with practical training.

The institute may also offer on-campus preparatory opportunities to outstanding diploma students. Those achieving high academic performance could become eligible for MS programmes without needing GATE scores, provided they meet the required CGPA standards.

The fundamental theory subjects will be taught through recorded lectures by experienced faculty members. These sessions will be supplemented with live interactive tutorials and online discussion platforms to support better understanding and engagement.

During the official announcement of the programme at the IIT Madras campus, Director V. Kamakoti highlighted that aeronautics and space technology are rapidly expanding fields requiring skilled professionals. He stated that the BS programme represents another initiative by IIT Madras to make these career opportunities more accessible to a wider range of learners.

Students who achieve high academic results may be eligible for admission into on-campus programmes or higher-level degree courses at IIT Madras, subject to their overall performance.
