An emergency alert issued by the Tumbler Ridge RCMP on Tuesday afternoon, February 10, warned of an active shooter situation in northeastern British Columbia, prompting residents across a wide area to shelter in place. Authorities urged people to stay indoors, lock their doors, and avoid leaving their homes or businesses until further notice.
The initial alert described the suspect as a woman with brown hair wearing a dress and instructed residents not to approach her and to call 911 if seen. In a brief update, RCMP said the “original suspect” is now believed to have been found dead. Police are continuing to investigate whether a second suspect may be involved.
RCMP said officers were first called to Tumbler Ridge Secondary School at approximately 1:20 PM local time. At this time, police have not confirmed whether there are any victims or how many people may have been injured, stating they have “no confirmation on the number of individuals injured or requiring assistance.”
School District 59, which covers the Peace River South region, confirmed that a “hold and secure” lockdown was implemented at both Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and nearby Tumbler Ridge Elementary School. The district asked parents and residents to remain patient as officials continue to work closely with RCMP.
The shelter-in-place order extends beyond Tumbler Ridge to include Chetwynd, Dawson Creek, and surrounding areas. Tumbler Ridge is a community of roughly 2,400 people, located about 660 kilometres northeast of Vancouver. Authorities said the situation remains active and further updates will be released as more information becomes available.
