GK Quiz For Students: Do You Know When Were First Board Exams Conducted in India?

gk quiz for students: do you know when were first board exams conducted in india?

The concept of ‘board exams’ is not something that dates back to a few decades, but it actually goes back to the British colonial period when formal education system and exams were introduced. It is believed that it was in 1858 when the first matric (class 10) board exam was conducted by the University of Calcutta. Universities such as e University of Calcutta, University of Bombay, and University of Madras were established in 2857, and first formal board exam was conducted the year after (1858).

Before that, while students were being taught in schools, there weren’t any set centralised test for everyone. It is believed that the British introduced board exams to standardise education, and bring in a system to select students for higher education and jobs. Interestingly, though, education was in a way limited to elites at that time. Also, the first exam was in English, even though Indians didn’t speak the language fluently back then. This made the exam extremely difficult for students, and even out of reach for some students who weren’t trained in the English language.
