Divya Mittal has successfully cleared several highly competitive examinations in India, including the entrance tests for the Indian Institutes of Technology and the Indian Institutes of Management. She did not stop here but also cracked one of the toughest exams in the world—the Union Public Service Commission, UPSC CSE. Currently an IAS officer from the 2013 batch of the Uttar Pradesh cadre. To guide students, she often shares insights from her own preparation journey.
Divya Mittal once shared that staying focused during long preparation periods is challenging for every aspirant. However, she also shared some of the simple habits and disciplined study practices.
Block Internet for Six Hours Daily
She recommends using certain applications to disable internet access for at least six hours each day. She says that by using the app, the phone remains inaccessible during the set period. She also advises keeping smartphones switched off and away during study sessions. If needed, the phone can be kept locked with a parent or friend, as urgent matters can still be communicated when necessary
Study Early in the Morning
She advises placing the alarm away from the bed and setting it at a loud volume. Getting up to turn it off makes it less likely that students will return to sleep. Early morning study sessions are considered ideal as there are fewer distractions.
Tips to Improve Concentration
Students should study in short, focused sessions. She suggests maintaining 90-minute to two-hour intense study periods followed by a 15-minute break. According to her, maintaining concentration beyond that duration is difficult, so each session should be timed and distraction-free.
Practice Tratak Meditation
Tratak meditation can help enhance concentration. It involves fixing the eyes steadily on an object, such as a candle flame, a pencil, or a specific spot on the wall, to train the mind to remain focused.
Exercise and Spend Time Outdoors
She encourages regular physical activity, preferably outdoors. A 20-minute walk in a park, spending time in nature, or even getting a few minutes of sunlight daily can help improve both mental clarity and overall well-being.
Reduce Mobile Phone Usage
Students should regularly review their screen time and monitor the applications where they spend most of their time. She notes that many people remain unaware of how much time they actually lose while using mobile apps.
