Papmochani Ekadashi is being observed today. Drik Panchang states that the Ekadashi which comes between Holika Dahan and Chaitra Navratri is known as Papmochani Ekadashi. Drik Panchang also states, “Papmochani Ekadashi is observed during Krishna Paksha of Chaitra month according to North Indian Purnimanta calendar and Krishna Paksha of Phalguna month according to South Indian Amanta calendar.”
One of the most important aspects of Ekadashi is observing and breaking the vrat in a correct manner. The Parana, which is breaking the Ekadashi fast, is conducted on the following day (Dwadashi tithi), after sunrise.
Papmochani Ekadashi Vrat Katha
Reciting vrat katha today is considered of great importance. Read the story associated with this day below.
The legend of Papamochani Ekadashi, which was narrated by Lord Krishna to Arjuna, tells the story of Medhavi Rishi, a young and powerful devotee of Lord Shiva who meditated in the Chaitraratha forest.
The beauty of the forest and the sage’s radiance attracted the Apsara Manjughosha. Influenced by Kamadeva (the god of love), she enchanted the sage with her music and beauty. Lost in lust, Medhavi Rishi forgot his penance. He remained with Manjughosha for 57 years, believing only a single night had passed. Upon realising the loss of his spiritual merit, the sage was consumed by rage. He cursed Manjughosha to become a Pishachini (a flesh-eating spirit). Worried by this, the Apsara begged for mercy.

Following this, Medhavi Rishi then sought counsel from his father, sage Chyavan, who confirmed that the only way to restore his own tarnished radiance was to observe the same fast. Both the sage and the Apsara performed the rituals with devotion – which dissolved Medhavi’s sins and Manjughosha was liberated from her ghoulish form, returning to heaven in her celestial beauty.
